BRASS BAND INSTRUMENTATION

back to [ Popular | Original | Classical | Solos | Christmas | Miscellaneous ]

There are several variations on the standard Brass band instrument line-up.
In particular Salvation Army band publications use a number of different formats.
Because of my Salvation Army background, a few of the pieces on this website are in SA format,
and for the sake of clarity, the differences are outlined below.

In Salvation Army instrumentation, there is no Repiano Cornet.
1st Cornet equates to Standard Brass Band 2nd Cornet, and SA 2nd Cornet equates to SBB 3rd Cornet.
SA 1st and 2nd Cornet parts are designed to be heard equally. Therefore if, as sometimes happens,
the Repiano player is given the 1st Cornet part exclusively, an imbalance will occur. A better
solution would be to give the Repiano player a copy of the Solo Cornet part.
Allthough SA Triumph series is intended for bands with fewer players, music written with this instrumentation
still has a 'full' sound when played competantly. Note the omission of Solo Cornet and Solo Horn.
Flugel Horn is also omitted, but some pieces contain a direction within the 2nd Cornet part
for the use of a Flugel Horn where possible.
